If you haven't watched all in the series I would really advise it. They are so on the money - great stuff.

This woman won the lottery and then became a JW!

Another thing worth noticing in this story - Viv became a JW when her life had reached a very low point. This is of course the usual JW recruitment technique - find the vulnerable and present them with a fake conditional support system.

Yep - this is an old story. Viv won the football pools which was the fore runner of the lottery today. It makes you wonder sometimes if having a lot of money is the answer to everything.

Pretty much like a second class citizen as my dad was an 'unbelieving mate', therefore we weren't in the cliques.

Where did England disappear to?
by dorayakii inengland is the oldest nation-state in europe.
it is a pround and historic nation that is often buried under a "british" identity by the uk government.
within the european unon, scotland and wales are treated as regional entities, yet england is broken up into 6 regions and is not acknowledged as an entity in itself.

St. George - some points to consider: The SNP did poorly in the recent election, based on this there is no real ground swell for independance. Alex Salmond has been stalling the proposed referendum because he knows that public opinion does not support it. This means that any generalised assumption that Scotland wants independance is not supported by evidence.
There has also been substantial English migration into Scotland. This is particularly evident in the North of Scotland where those selling their houses in the South East can have huge property purchasing power. I believe that the media tag for them is 'white settlers.' In my line of work I have many English colleagues, and to be perfectly honest it's not something I give much thought to.

Think about the reasons that Scotland is 'red'. The Thatcher government destroyed our major industries and left many skilled people without employment. People do not forget these things and it inevitably shapes how the population will vote.
The Scottish parliament powers are still fundamentally limited, the power devolved is still very much peripheral and we retain the same core systems as the rest of the UK. You keep saying 'Scotland has said' - have you conducted a survey amongst all of the population? Based on this your statements are gross generalisations and cannot claim to be representative.
I'm quite happy that paying my taxes will benefit all UK citizens - independance does not have a strong support in Scotland as the election results show.

What a fantastic and moving story. This reminds me so much of my own thoughts as a teenager. I had decided that I was going to let Jehovah kill me as I didn't want to spend eternity in paradise without my loving 'worldly' family - especially my Dad. This meant the the concept of paradise became tainted for me as it would involve possibly having to watch those I care about dying a horrible death simply because they were not JWs.
This was frightening enough for me as a teenager, I can't even begin to imagine the impact on a small child. This use of fear tactics is morally and ethically repugnant but unfortunately commonly used. We had a young child in our congo whose party piece was to tell people that if they didn't take the magazines then they would die. Thankfully I have heard that this family has escaped the clutches of the org, but these are the kind of things that become deeply ingrained in your memory.
I applaud you for how you have handled a very difficult situation, I hope that your approach can help others.
Now - if your team could play as well as you write...... ;)
